The Schmitt-Kopplin independent research unit performs comprehensive metabolomics in health and environment. The analytical approach combines (ultra)high resolution mass spectrometry, separation sciences and NMR-spectroscopy for the description of complex molecular systems on a molecular level. Their interdisciplinary studies are related to important diseases linked to environmental factors and microbiomes (natural environments, nutrition/food chemistry, pathogens) such as specifically diabetes, asthma & allergies, probiotics, intestinal infections and microbial pathogens.

Professor of Pharmaceutical Technologies in the department of Pharmaceutical, Chemical & Environmental Sciences within the School of Science.
Strong research interest in structure elucidation by NMR spectroscopy and in metabonomics.

J. Everett conceived metabonomics, and named and defined it together with J. Nicholson (Imperial College, London), with whom he has a long-standing collaboration. He is a co-discoverer of pharmacometabonomics: which is the ability to predict the effects of drugs prior to dosing via metabolic profiling, and he is a co-inventor on a patent granted in the European Community on metabolic profiling in 2011. He is a Visiting Professor in the Department of Surgery and Cancer at Imperial College.
J. Everett is a co-leader of the Medway Metabonomics Group(MMRG) together with Dr R-L. Loo from the School of Pharmacy and Prof F. Pullen from the School of Science.
