Measurement methods and Modelling approaches for predicting desirable future Wood properties

Context

  Wood products differ from other manufactured products essentially by the fact that they originate from raw material created in forests, according to complex biological phenomena and influenced by environmental conditions and changes. These conditions depend on silviculture, in turn influenced by economic, ecological and social factors.

One of the main challenges for the current forest-wood research is to bring together the knowledge on how wood properties can be modified in trees with the performances required for the traditional and emerging end-use wood products. The success of this link will depend on the optimal utilization of the natural wood properties, improved quality of the manufactured wood products and their economic competitiveness.

Objectives

  The international conference on “Measurement techniques and Modelling approaches for predicting desirable future Wood properties” is aligned with the conferences organised within the IUFRO Working Party 5.01.04 “Wood Quality Modelling” since 1994. It aims to include scientists involved in analysing and modelling wood properties at various scales from molecular to regional resource scales. It is intended to share ideas and collaborating on strategies of data acquisition and modelling approaches to optimize end-product performance connected to wood properties modified in standing trees.

Topics

  In accordance with the four main perspectives drawn by the last Workshop held in Joensuu Finland in 2008, tackled themes will include (not exclusively):

 Context :

  • What will be the uses and desirable properties of wood in the 21st century?
  • How can forest wood resources match required end-use performances?
  • How can these relationships be taken into account in data acquisition and modelling?

Innovative methods of data acquisition : How can emerging measurement technologies of wood properties at various scales (A- and T- Lidar, tomography, microscopy etc …) efficiently provide data for modelling? How should we handle the sometimes huge amounts of data produced?

Modelling:

  • Building model chains dedicated to simulating forest/tree growth and wood quality (issues of parsimony, validation, error propagation, computing facilities ...);
  • Molecular scale modelling of wood properties;
  • Multi-scale modelling of wood properties in standing trees;
  • Predicting the impact of forest management and climate change on macroscopic wood properties;
  • Economic and environmental assessment of forest-wood chains (issues of life cycle assessment, carbon sequestration ...);
  • Model inclusion in easy-to-use decision support softwares

Schedule

Deadline for abstract submission is April 30th, 2013. Abstract acceptance/non-acceptance notifications will be sent by the end of May.

Early Bird registration will end on August 1st, 2013.
